They’re Australia’s most lovable family.
With a window into their family life thanks to their prolific social media accounts and sharing video moments of their kids, it’s easy to think that the couple have it all sorted out.
But Hamish, 37, and Zoe, 38, are humble about their relationship and their successes. Dishing out their best love advice to 60 Minutes reporter Allison Langdon, the Blake’s maintain that the foundation for their loving partnership is simple: friendship.
“When times get tough, when you’ve got kids, and you’re sleep-deprived… you’re falling back on your friendship far more than you’re falling back on sexy times and flirting,” Hamish said.
The pair met at the launch of a men’s deodorant more than a decade ago and developed a fast-friendship — Hamish, the radio and TV comedy star — and Zoe then a beauty and relationships editor at Cosmopolitan magazine.
It’s a union that would eventually lead to their first collaboration — a book on dating and how to snare the perfect partner.
But at the time of writing, neither Hamish or Zoe had any inkling that their friendship could blossom into anything more.
“To be frank, I loved him very much as a friend, but I did not consider him romantically,” Zoe told Langdon.
It wasn’t until the two found themselves single at the same time that love blossomed — and two years later they were married.
On his advice to keep the romance alive, Hamish maintains it should include “date night.”
“Date night infers leaving the house. But once the kids are in bed, we have dinner, we have a drink, and we watch our shows,” he said.
And when it comes to parenting, the Foster-Blake family says their philosophy is all about collaboration.
“We’re just kinda like rookies and we’re open to new advice,” Zoe said.
“We want the kids to just know that the number one thing in life is love and fun. And that’s what family is about,” Hamish adds.
“But I think also like everyone you’re just making it up as you go.”
